“Frau Knotz’s music is pure poetry in sound, crafted so well that it feels like you’ve entered another world.”
— Voxwave Magazine 2024
Aotearoa electronica artist-singer-producer Frau Knotz walks the tightrope between euphoria and terror, the enigmatic and anthemic, the fictional and the bold. Using genres as colours and textures in her music, brush strokes of techno, ambient, trip-hop, experimental beats and spoken word are daubed with discernment across a spellbinding sonic experience that thrusts audiences into an avant-garde, cinematic world.
2022 was a breakout year for Frau Knotz. After just 3 months of developing her project, she was picked up as the opening act for Trip Change on their North Island tour to celebrate NZ Music Month. The momentum rose in September with the release of her debut single Supernova, the music video of which was featured on MTV Upload and Juice TV. ‘Supernova’ was premiered exclusively by The Most FM’s Making Tracks series, reviewed by muzic.net.nz and added to playlists of many independent radio stations nationwide.
Festival highlights for 2022 include performing ‘Supernova’ with a live band curated by the Black Seeds’ frontman Barnaby Weir at TAFT’s Spiegelfest closing night, as well as ending the year with a New Year’s Eve feature performance at Taranaki’s TSB Festival of Lights.
2023 saw two single releases, with her successful sophomore single Runway of Reality hitting over 1.3k views on YouTube, charting on Radio Control’s Top 10 ending with a headline show at the King’s Theatre in Stratford. Her third single Cellular dropped November 10th with success across Aotearoa’s student radio network, and a collaboration with choreographer Mizaan Turner resulted in a music video and performance to a sold-out crowd at Dancing For Hope Taranaki, raising funds for local charities.
Festival highlights include her DJ debut in July for TSB Festival of Lights Winter Pop-Up, as well as being a featured guest at the Wellington Jazz Festival in October backed by the Other Futures Big Band.
2024 was the year of Nextraterrestrial; her spellbinding debut EP which heralded a change in direction from her earlier danceable electropop style to a cinematic, otherworldly odyssey steeped in experimental retro-futurism. Prior to its release in August, Frau Knotz tantalised listeners with three enigmatic singles, all met with eager support from local and international media. 'Odyssey I' has amassed over 10,000 Spotify streams, ‘Other Futures’ charted on the Top 20 NZ Hot Singles Chart and ‘The Heart of Spring’ hit number 4 on the RDU FM Top 10. Together they featured across 95bFM and the bNet student radio network, Under The Radar, NZ Musician Magazine, 13th Floor, 4ZZZ (Australia), Zone Nights (Argentina), Voxwave Magazine, and Expansión Radial (Mexico).
Nextraterrestrial’s success has eventuated in an appearance at WOMAD Aotearoa 2025, a sold-out hometown crowd at the EP’s Film Premiere, a headline show at The Stomach in Palmerston North and a bespoke performance in the Len Lye Centre to a crowd of national arts patrons. With her sophomore EP Digital Plastic Surgery to hit the airwaves later this year and upcoming live performances around Aotearoa, Frau Knotz is ready to elevate spirits with her unique and infectious brand of electronic beats.
